Getting a Library Card:

A Smith Public Library card is free!

  • To get a library card, go to the Smith Public Library. You will need to print your name and know your address or you can have someone (parent or guardian) help you fill out the application.
  • You can get your library card the same day if your parent or guardian is with you and shows identification with your address.
  • When you get your library card, sign or write you name on the back and keep it in a safe place. Do not loan your card to your friends to check out books. They can sign up for their own cards!
  • You can use your library card to check out books, magazines, audiocassettes, book on tape, books on CD, DVDs and videos. When you finish with your materials, bring them back and check out more. If you bring your books or other items back after the due date, then you will need to pay a fine.

So, sign up today and join in the fun and adventure at The Smith Public Library!

Checking out Books and other Materials:

  • You can use your library card to check out books, videos, books on tape, books on CD, DVD and audiocassettes.
  • To check out an item, bring it and your library card to the circulation desk. The person at the desk will use a laser scanner to read the bar code on your library card and the book. Everything you are checking out is recorded in the computer. You will be given a list of everything you have checked out and their due dates (when you have to bring them back).
  • When you are finished with the materials you check out, bring them back and check out some more. It's free unless you don't bring them back before the date due. Then you will have to pay a fine.
  • If your record shows that you owe the library more than $10.00, you will not be able to check out any more books until the fine has been paid or reduced. If you can't use the library because of fines, please talk to us - we can help work out a way of paying them off over time or working them off. Remember that if you let someone else, even your mother or best friend, check out books on your card, you are responsible for any late or unreturned materials.
