Joel Scott Memorial Park Dedication
On July 19, 2004, more than 100 people attended the City’s
dedication of Joel Scott Memorial Park. City Council commemorated
former councilmember Joel Scott’s service to the Wylie community
with a summer-style picnic and ceremony.
Speaking at the dedication were Margaret Scott, Joel’s widow,
Mayor John Mondy, Mayor ProTem Eric Hogue and more educational and
community leaders. At the dedication, Margaret Scott, Miranda Scott
(Joel’s daughter) and Austin (Joel’s son) unveiled the
stone entry park sign.
Originally named Birmingham Park, City Council unanimously renamed
the Park for Scott in January. First elected to the Wylie City Council
in 1995, Scott ran unopposed in 1997, 1999 and 2001. With one year
remaining on his term, Scott resigned in May 2003 to spend more
time with his family. Scott passed away in September 2003 of a heart
attack at the age of 42.
The Park is 8 acres of dedicated parkland and Wylie ISD property
located at Brown Street and Westgate Way, just behind Birmingham
Elementary. This is one of Wylie’s newest parks and features
an approximately .5 mile-walking trail, playground (on WISD property),
picnic tables, benches and trees/landscape. The Park was funded
through the Collin County Parks and Open Space Project Funding Assistance
Program.
