Mayor Eric Hogue delivered his annual State of the City Address on Tuesday, February 26, during a special Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at the First Baptist Church Events Center. Before taking the stage, a video titled "Home" set the tone for his presentation.
Mayor Eric Hogue presented the annual State of the City Address to the citizens of Wylie on February 26, 2013, during a special Wylie Chamber of Commerce luncheon attended by nearly 200 people. A video titled Wylie, Texas—Home, featuring events, activities and faces of Wylie, set the theme for the 30 minute speech highlighting Wylie’s accomplishments over the past year.
Speaking on Home Security, Mayor Hogue recognized the Police Department and the 13% drop in the crime rate over the past year—the lowest rate in five years. He touted the City’s advanced fire protection and ISO Class 1 rating (Insurance Service Office).
Moving to Home Improvement, Hogue stated, “In 2012 we opened our new Public Works Service Center. We began remodeling our Public Safety Building (old city hall) which houses the Police Department, Fire Administration and Municipal Court. Community Park was officially reopened in this past year after an extensive renovation.”
Hogue then touted the Smith Public Library and Wylie Recreation Center saying that, “Home is a great place for family time. 7,500 new recreation membership passes were issued in 2012; 89,000 visits were made to the fitness floor; 19,000 guests used the indoor track; and 60,000 miles were logged running or walking on the treadmills. The library had nearly a half a million items checked out; we added over 6,000 new library card holders; and had nearly 200,000 visitors.”
Mayor Hogue highlighted recently opened and soon-to-be opened businesses that call Wylie home, including the twelve screen B&B Theatre to open April 25, a Kroger Marketplace, Medical Plaza of Wylie featuring a LakePointe Health Network emergency room, Rosa’s Mexican Café, Dairy Queen, RaceTrac and much more. He was proud to announce that December 2012 sales tax receipts totaled nearly $751,000, the highest single month in Wylie’s history.
Mayor Hogue wrapped up the speech reflecting on Wylie’s 125th Anniversary, “I wonder what those 42 citizens who voted to incorporate our town on November 8, 1887, would think if they could see us now...I don’t know about you, but I would say Wylie is a great place to call home!”
