TORNADO AWARENESS MONTH--APRIL
Wylie Fire-Rescue and the City of Wylie believe awareness and preparation can help save lives. With the Spring season upon us, severe weather with Spring storms can occur with little warning. Thunderstorms can produce heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, hail and tornadoes. Tornadoes are the most destructive and devastating product of a thunderstorm. Tornadoes are often accompanied by lightning, heavy rain and hail. A tornado watch is issued when conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop. Tornado warnings are issued when radar indicates a tornado or a trained spotter reports a tornado. The City of Wylie does all it can to forewarn citizens regarding weather emergencies through its SkyWarn volunteers, Nixle program, and outdoor warning sirens, although the primary responsibility for awareness belongs to each individual resident, utilizing radio, television, and weather radios. WFR intends to conduct a short campaign through email, newsletters, websites and newspaper articles to further educate and remind citizens of the need for planning and responding to tornadoes. For some great information about what a tornado is and how it forms, myths about tornados, and safety information, check out NOAA's website.
Emergency Medical Services Week
or EMS Week
May 20-26, 2012
Every day of the year, at all hours of the day and night citizens rely on emergency medical service professionals and volunteers for critical care in our homes, on the streets or where ever the need may exist. The City of Wylie’s EMS system includes a wide array of personnel, including 9-1-1 dispatchers, physicians, nurses, emergency medical dispatchers, firefighters, educators, law enforcement officials, paramedics and emergency medical technicians. These individuals provide quality care whenever unforeseen illness, accident or disaster strikes. Often their split second decisions are essential in preventing disability or death among our citizens.
During EMS Week, the City of Wylie is committed to recognizing all our EMS providers and celebrates their unselfish acts of courage in responding to all types of emergency situations. We encourage our citizens to do the same and thank your local fireman, paramedic, and/or EMT for the services they provide the communities!

Wildland Fires
Wildfire Awareness Week kicks off April 9 in Texas
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Forest Service is partnering with the City of Austin, Travis County, Texas Division of Emergency Management and the State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association to show Texans how to protect their homes and property from wildfire.
Wildfires destroyed almost 3,000 Texas homes last year, and there are many things homeowners can do to help prevent such catastrophic losses in the future.
In addition to offering information about protecting homes and property, Texas Forest Service officials say they want to raise awareness about the potential dangers of outdoor activities that can create a spark – such as debris burning, outdoor campfires, welding and tossed cigarettes. About 90 percent of wildfires in Texas are human caused.
“Preventing wildfires is a community responsibility,” said Justice Jones, Wildland Urban Interface and Prevention Program Coordinator for Texas Forest Service. “We want to engage all Texans and work together toward building a safer place for all of us to live.”
The following products can be downloaded from the Texas Forest Service website to guide homeowners in protecting their property:
