We are located at 800 Thomas St in Wylie.
What do I need to do to get a library card?
You must have a valid picture I.D. and proof of address to get a card. A current driver’s license, utility bill, tax bill, ID, pay stub, or other similar documents may be used as proof of current residency. There are no fees for non-residents at the Smith Public Library.
A library card is required every time you checkout.
May I get a card for my child?
Yes. We do not have an age limit for children as long as parents are willing to keep up with their accounts.
What if I cannot find my library card or it is stolen?
Please contact the library to block your account if your card is lost or stolen to prevent unauthorized use of your card. Lost and stolen cards can be replaced for a $1 fee. You must bring a picture I.D. to get your card replaced. Children under the age of 18 must bring a parent or guardian with a photo I.D. Once you obtain a new card, your original one will not work .
May I access the Internet at the library?
Yes. We have a reservation system for our computers. You scan your card and are assigned a computer and time slot. You get up two hours a day in 30 minute increments.
What do I need to do to get access to the Internet?
You need to sign our Internet Use Form when you obtain your library card. You can change your computer use status at any time.
Do you have Wi-Fi?
Yes. You are welcome to bring in your own laptop. Please ask any staff member for Wi-Fi log in and password.
How much do print jobs cost?
Black and white print jobs are $.10 per page. Full color print jobs are $.25 per page. The machine accepts cash only and will take $1 and $5 bills. Please bring small bills and change as we are not able to make change for print jobs.
What types of materials do you have?
We have books, audio books (CD, cassette and Playaway), DVDs, Magazines, Music CDs, and Leapfrog books and cartridges.
How long may I keep the materials I check out?

How many items can I check out at one time?
There is no limit on books, audio books or CDs. Whatever you feel you can keep up with is fine. You may only have 10 DVDs checked out on your card at any given time.
Do you charge late fees?
Materials that are not returned by the due date are assessed a $.10 extended use fee. DVDs carry a $.50 per day per item extended use fee.
Extended use fees were approved by our Mayor and City Council.
If I have fines, will I be able to use my card?
If your fines are under $5.00 you will be allowed to check out. Fines do not affect computer privileges.
May I return materials after hours?
Yes. A 24-hour drop slot is located in the front of the building next to the flag pole.
What happens if I lose a book?
You will be charged the full amount of the item plus a $3 processing fee to cover the costs of preparing the item for checkout.
What if I find a book I have already paid for?
Refunds will be given for lost items minus a $3 processing fee as long as they are returned within 6 months of payment.
What happens if an item I checked out is damaged?
If you notice any damage to any item you have in your possession, please notify the library immediately.
What happens if I damage an item?
An item may have to be paid for in full depending on the severity of the damage. Partial charges may apply for damaged items or items returned without barcodes, spine labels or art work.
Do you offer Interlibrary Loan services?
Patrons may request specific titles that we currently do not own, to be borrowed from other libraries through interlibrary loan. The time period to obtain materials varies. There is a $2.00 fee per request. Five requests are allowed per month, per library card holder. To obtain an item via interlibrary loan, a patron must fill out a loan request form at the library.
When the material arrives, you will receive a phone call and you have 14 days to pick up the item. If it is not picked up within that time, the material will be sent back to the lending library.
Please note we do not do interlibrary loans on materials that are less than one year old, DVDs or manga series.
Do you have copy and fax machines for public use?
Yes. The copy machine is self serve and it is $.10 per page. Staff is able to process faxes for the public and they are $.50 per page.
What kind of programs do you offer?

How do I place a request on an item?
Click on the item that you want on our catalog. On the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose “hold request.” Enter your full library card number located on the back of your card underneath the barcode. You do not have to include the spaces. Enter your PIN number, which is the last four digits of your card number unless you changed it. Click on “submit request.”
You will receive an automated phone call when the item is ready for you to pick up.
What’s the difference between a request and a hold?
A request means that someone is waiting for that item. It has not yet been set aside for them.
A hold means it has your name on it and can only be checked out by you.
Do you participate in TexShare?
We do not participate in the TexShare card program. However, we do have access to the TexShare databases through the “databases” link on the left hand menu bar. Please call us for log in and password information to use this database from home.
How can I volunteer at the library?
Please call the library to see if volunteer slots are available. You must be at least 13 years old to volunteer. We do not accept court ordered community service.
Do you offer GED classes?
Yes. GED classes are on Tuesdays from 5:00-8:00pm during the school year. There is no fee and no registration required.
Do you offer ESL classes?
Currently, we do not offer ESL classes.
Do you offer computer classes?
Currently, we do not offer computer classes.
How do I go about suggesting you purchase an item?
Please inform any staff member of an item you wish the library to purchase. Your request will be forwarded to the appropriate staff member for consideration.
Do you accept donations?
The library staff appreciates your interest in donating materials. Due to a lack of space, increase in staff and preparations for the move the new building, the library is no longer accepting donations. Please click here for a list of suggested donation sites.
Do you have study rooms?
We do not have study rooms at this time.
Is there more than one library in Wylie?
No.
Are you building a new library?
Yes. The new Smith Public Library will be located at the current intersection of 1378 and Brown. The 43,934 square foot library will include a meeting room, teen center, storytime room, computer lab and quiet room. Opening is slated for early 2011. |
