What are your hours?

Our hours of operation are as follows:

Monday 10:00am - 8:00pm
Tuesday 10:00am - 8:00pm
Wednesday 10:00am - 6:00pm
Thursday 10:00am - 8:00pm
Friday 10:00am - 5:00pm
Saturday 10:00am - 5:00pm
Sunday Closed

The library is closed on major holidays.

What do I need to do to get a library card?

You must have a valid picture I.D. and proof of address to get a card. A current driver’s license, utility bill, tax bill, ID, pay stub, or other similar documents may be used as proof of current residency.  

A library card is required every time you checkout.


Do I have to be a resident of Wylie to get a card?

No. We welcome everyone at our library. However, you must have a valid picture I.D. and proof of address to get a card. There are no fees for non-residents at the Smith Public Library.


May I get a card for my child?

Yes. We do not have an age limit for children as long as parents are willing to keep up with their accounts.


What if I cannot find my library card or it is stolen? 

Please contact the library to block your account if your card is lost or stolen to prevent unauthorized use of your card. Lost and stolen cards can be replaced for a $1 fee. You must bring a picture I.D. to get your card replaced. Children under the age of 18 must bring a parent or guardian with a photo I.D. Once you obtain a new card, your original one will not work.

Internet Access and Printing:

May I access the Internet at the library?

Yes. You get up two hours a day in one-hour increments. You must bring your own headphones.


Children and teens are also allotted two hours a day, but children are given 30 minutes at a time. Teens may check out a laptop and use it in the teen room. They are available on a first come, first served basis. Minors must have Internet permission on their own cards. They must also bring their own headphones.


What do I need to do to get access to the Internet?

Adults are automatically given access. You may immediately use a computer in the Adult area.

Minors need to have their own cards and are not allowed to use their parents' or siblings' cards to use a computer. A parent or legal guardian must come in and sign a computer use policy form in order for them to be allowed on the children's Internet computers or the teen laptops.


Do you have Wi-Fi?

Yes, you are welcome to bring in your own laptop. 


How much do print jobs cost?

Black and white print jobs are $.10 per page. Full color print jobs are $.25 per page. The machine accepts cash only and will take $1 and $5 bills. Please bring small bills and change as we are not able to make change for print jobs.

What types of materials do you have?

We have books, audio books (CD and Playaway), DVDs, Magazines, Music CDs, and Leapfrog books and cartridges.


How long may I keep the materials I check out?

 Juvenile Magazines are for in-house use only.


How many items can I check out at one time?

The first time you use your card, you are limited to three books and 1 DVD. After that, there is no limit on books, audio books or CDs. Whatever you feel you can keep up with is fine. You may only have five DVDs checked out on your card at any given time.


Do you charge late fees?

Materials that are not returned by the due date are assessed a $.10 extended use fee. DVDs carry a $.50 per day per item extended use fee.

Extended use fees were approved by our Mayor and City Council.


If I have fines, will I be able to use my card?

If your fines are under $5.00 you will be allowed to check out. Fines do not affect computer privileges.


May I return materials after hours?

Yes. A drive up 24-hour drop slot is located in the front of the building.


What happens if I lose a book?

You will be charged the full amount of the item plus a $3 processing fee to cover the costs of preparing the item for checkout.


What if I find a book I have already paid for?

Refunds will be given for lost items minus a $3 processing fee as long as they are returned within six months of payment.


What happens if an item I checked out is damaged?

If you notice any damage to any item you have in your possession, please notify the library immediately at 972-516-6250.


What happens if I damage an item?

An item may have to be paid for in full depending on the severity of the damage. Partial charges may apply for damaged items or items returned without barcodes, spine labels or art work. 


Do you offer Interlibrary Loan services?

Patrons may request specific titles that we currently do not own, to be borrowed from other libraries through interlibrary loan. The time period to obtain materials varies. Five requests are allowed per month, per library card holder. To obtain an item via interlibrary loan, a patron must fill out a loan request form at the library. This service is free unless the item is not picked up, in which case a $2.00 fee is assessed.


When the material arrives, you will receive a phone call and you have seven business days to pick up the item. If it is not picked up within that time, the material will be sent back to the lending library.


Do you have copy and fax machines for public use?

Yes.  Fax service is provided by Fax 24 and accepts credit card payment only. Faxing is $1.75 for the first page and $1.00 for additional pages. Faxing to international numbers is $3.95 for the first page, $3.45 for additional pages. Please note the library cannot receive faxes.


What kind of programs do you offer?

We have storytime, book clubs, teen events and much more. Please visit our Events Calendar  for more information.


How do I place a request on an item?

Click on the item that you want on our catalog. On the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose “hold request.” Enter your full library card number located on the back of your card underneath the barcode. You do not have to include the spaces. Enter your PIN number, which is the last four digits of your card number unless you changed it. Click on “submit request.”


You will receive an automated phone call or e-mail notification when the item is ready for you to pick up. Items are held for one week.


What’s the difference between a request and a hold?

A request means that someone is waiting for that item. It has not yet been set aside for them.


A hold means it has your name on it and can only be checked out by you.


Do you participate in TexShare?

We do not participate in the TexShare card program. However, we do have access to the TexShare databases through the “databases” link on the left hand menu bar. Please call us for log in and password information to use this database from home.


How can I volunteer at the library?

We love our volunteers and cannot imagine running the library without them! We rely on volunteers to get items back on the shelves, however other duties may arise depending on the time of year and work load. All volunteers are trained by a staff member and we do not accept court ordered community service. All volunteers must fill out an application and a background check is also required.
Adults 18 and older may fill out this application and this release for a background check. We do ask adult volunteers to commit to working 2 hours a week.Volunteer slots are not always available, so please call the library (972-516-6250) if you are interested in volunteering right away. Otherwise, your application will be held on file for a year until slots become available. Please bring completed applications to the Service Desk. Electronic applications are not accepted. Please contact Cheryl with any additional questions.
Teens ages 13-17 may also volunteer. Teen applications are different from the adult applications and they are posted on the teen page in April for summer volunteering opportunities and in August for slots during the school year. Teen volunteer slots are limited and not guaranteed. Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to offer one day volunteer opportunities. All teen volunteers attend an orientation and training session provided by a staff member. Generally teens work one day a week for two hours during the school year and up to two days a week for two hours a day during the summer. One hour shifts are also acceptable. Do you offer GED classes?

Yes. Classes meet Tuesdays from 5:00-8:00 and are held in the library's conference room. Contact Cindy Anderson via e-mail at cindy.anderson@wylieisd.net or by phone at 972-429-3100 ext. 6266 for more information.

Classes follow the same holiday schedule as WISD.


Do you offer ESL classes?

Currently, we do not offer ESL classes. A list of ESL programs in the surrounding area can be found here.

Adult ESL classes are available at Groves Elementary and Hartman Elementary on Tuesday and Thursday each week from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Contact Liz Garrett at 972-429-2387 or liz.garrett@wylieisd.net for more information. 



Do you offer computer classes?

Yes, the library does offer computer classes.  A schedule of classes can be found here.


How do I go about suggesting you purchase an item?

Please inform any staff member of an item you wish the library to purchase. Your request will be forwarded to the appropriate staff member for consideration.


 Do you accept book donations?

 Yes. Please place all book donations inside the bin in the lobby of the building. If it is a large number of books, please call the library for assistance 972-516-6250. 


Do you have study rooms?

We have three study rooms that are available on a first come, first served basis. You must sign in at the Adult Desk to use them.  Study rooms are limited to two hours per day per person and /or group.


Is there more than one library in Wylie?



Do you provide tours of the library?

Tours of the library are available for parties of at least 10 and that do not exceed 40. Please see our Group Tour Policy  and Group Tour Request Form for more detailed information. Please note three weeks notice is required to schedule a tour.

You may also want to consider our self-guided tour that you can print out and bring to the library. This tour is perfect for smaller student groups led by an adult.
