The primary goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to foster a better relationship between the community and the police department through training, utilizing the philosophy of a two-way lecture. It is envisioned that class members will:
- Gain an understanding of the operations of the Wylie Police Department
- Develop an awareness and appreciation of the various challenges and decisions faced daily by police officers
- Participate in practical exercises designed to illustrate various situations an officer experiences while on duty.
Graduates of the programs have formed the Wylie Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, an active group whose mission is to promote and enhance the relationship between the Wylie Police Department and the community through continued law enforcement education and support of the department’s effort. RIDE AGAINST CRIME 2014
On May 3rd, the Wylie Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (WCPAAA) held the 2nd Annual Ride Against Crime Bike Ride. Bikers joined the Alumni members for a fun hour and a half ride through scenic, curvy rural roads stopping at various locations to collect a free raffle ticket at each stop. Riders were given a total of five free raffle tickets for an opportunity to win great prizes. Additional raffle tickets were available for sale for better odds of winning the various prizes. The ride ended at the Olde City Park in downtown Wylie where music and free food and drinks were provided in the covered picnic area. Mayor Eric Hogue announced the winning raffle tickets.
The WCPAAA hopes to see more riders and passengers next year, so please spread the word. Our next event will be May 16, 2015. We wish to thank the many Wylie and surrounding area merchants for their sponsorship and donations. Special thanks to Meteor Hamburgers (Platinum) and The Refuge Church (Gold) for their generous sponsorships.
The WCPAAA is a non-profit, charitable organization. The purpose of the Association is to bring together the graduates of the Wylie Citizens Police Academy to enhance relations between the community and the Wylie Police Department through continuing education and to provide other assistance to the police department wherever possible. Last year, the Association purchased various items for the police department that were not included in the budget.
The Wylie Citizen's Police Academy Alumni purchased and presented Chief Duscio with new badges for the entire police department at a City Council meeting. The WCPAA asked officers to submit something they "wanted" instead of "needed." The officers in the department wanted new, updated badges, but since this wasn't a necessity they weren't part of the budget. The WCPAAA held fundraisers and earned the money to buy new badges for everyone. Wylie Officers now proudly wear badges that are unique to our department thanks to the WCPAA.
