Drug Recognition Expert
Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) police officers are trained to identify drug-impaired drivers. DRE refers not only to the officers themselves, but to the 12-step procedure that these officers use. Officers use a battery of tests to determine impairment. These tests include: breath alcohol testing, interview of the arresting officer, preliminary examination, eye examination, divided attention testing, examination of vital signs, dark room examinations, examination of muscle tone, examination of injection sites, suspect statements, opinion of the evaluation and toxicology exams.
Wylie PD drug recognition experts respond on a rotating on-call basis.
