Weapons & Tactics
"SWAT" (Special Weapons And Tactics) is a commonly used proper name for law enforcement units that use military-style light weapons and specialized tactics in high-risk operations that fall outside of the capabilities of regular, uniformed police.
Their duties include: confronting heavily armed criminals; performing hostage rescue operations and high-risk arrests; and entering armored or barricaded buildings. Such units are often equipped with specialized firearms including assault rifles, breaching tools, sniper rifles and stun grenades. They have specialized equipment including heavy body armor, ballistic shields and entry tools.
All members of the Wylie PD SWAT team are required to pass a rigorous physical fitness battery and attend SWAT training school. The members are also required to attend training eight hours per month to keep their skills and knowledge current.
The perimeter team works closely with the SWAT team to set up a containment area immediately surrounding the incident location that minimizes and controls the movement of a suspect within that secured area.
