Fire Station 3
In November 2005, Wylie voters approved the issuance of $1,500,000
general obligation bonds for the City to build Fire Station No.
3 at the intersection of Brown and W.A. Allen. The station is expected
to be completed in early 2008.
To counteract the longer than desired response times in the Northeastern
part of Wylie and with the projected opening of Station 3 still
being sometime away, Wylie Fire-Rescue leased and staffed Temporary
Fire Station 3 in July 2006. This station filled the immediate need
to supply an area of our city with timely, professional emergency
service.
The two-man crew of Temporary Station 3 responds in Wylie’s
new air and light truck, Squad 3. Squad 3 contains a full compliment
of Advance Life Support Equipment, similar to that of an ambulance,
as well as an air fill station, rescue supplies and a light tower.
Squad 3 responds to all calls in Station 3’s district, with
automatic assistance from another station if needed. With 80% of
all calls being medical related, Squad 3 has made a dramatic difference
in the time definitive emergency care arrives at the scene of an
incident. In fact, Squad 3 has achieved its goal of arriving on
scene within five minutes of notification 90% of the time, up from
only 36% prior to opening the Station. Squad 3 has very limited
firefighting capabilities, so a Quint is dispatched along with the
Squad on all calls that require fire suppression. If Squad 3 arrives
on the scene of a fire prior to a Quint, the personnel from Squad
3 will assess the scene and develop strategies for attack so that
when the Quint arrives the extinguishment is faster and more effective.
Temporary Station 3 will be in service until the construction of
the permanent building is completed. Since apparatus and personnel
will have already been in service for several months, the transition
to the new Station 3 will be seamless with minimal disruption of
service.
