Procedures
Listed are some examples of physical testing procedures that may
be used to determine eligibility for a position of firefighter.
These are only guidelines and are subject to change without notice.
Written Exam:
You will need to have identification with you and two pencils for
the written test. No hats or other materials will be permitted in
the testing area. If any special accommodations will be needed,
please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. We cannot tell you
as of the writing of this letter what test will be administered.
Clothing suitable to complete the physical agility should be worn
to take the written portion of the test.
Physical Agility:
In order to evaluate the physical readiness of a candidate for the
position of Firefighter/Paramedic, a series of events have been
assembled to simulate tasks found in fire suppression activities.
This test will consist of separate stations, in which each are used
to test certain aspects of fire suppression activities.

Layout
Station #1 – Obstacle Course
The Firefighter/Paramedic candidate will complete an obstacle course
consisting of eight events, which test the applicant’s ability
to complete activities commonly required by Wylie Fire Rescue. The
candidate will perform all aspects of the obstacle course while
wearing: a department issued Bunker Coat, Air Pack (not on air),
Firefighting Helmet, NFPA approved Structural Firefighting Gloves,
and Ankle Weights (5 lbs per ankle). The time allotted to complete
the obstacle course will be eight minutes, time starts on event
2 (equipment carry) and ends after completion of event eight (dummy
drag).

Station #2 – Primary Search of the Burn Building
Wearing the provided SCBA, blacked-out face mask, NFPA
gloves, helmet, coat, knee pads, and ankle weights, you will navigate
a maze while breathing air from the SCBA.
Station #3 – Mega Code
The candidate will perform as the lead paramedic in
a simulated medical emergency. Wylie Fire Rescue will provide assisting
personnel; these assistants will perform any activities directed
by the candidate. The Candidate may use whichever protocols he/she
is most comfortable with. This exercise is used to evaluate train-of-thought,
organizational skills, utilization of resources and basic paramedic
skills. Not specific protocols.
