Testing Procedures

Listed are some examples of physical testing procedures that may be used to determine eligibility for a position of firefighter. These are only guidelines and are subject to change without notice.

Written Exam:
You will need to have identification with you and two pencils for the written test. No hats or other materials will be permitted in the testing area. If any special accommodations will be needed, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. We cannot tell you as of the writing of this letter what test will be administered. Clothing suitable to complete the physical agility should be worn to take the written portion of the test.

Physical Agility:
In order to evaluate the physical readiness of a candidate for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic, a series of events have been assembled to simulate tasks found in fire suppression activities. This test will consist of separate stations, in which each are used to test certain aspects of fire suppression activities.

Testing Layout

Station #1 – Obstacle Course
The Firefighter/Paramedic candidate will complete an obstacle course consisting of eight events, which test the applicant’s ability to complete activities commonly required by Wylie Fire Rescue. The candidate will perform all aspects of the obstacle course while wearing: a department issued Bunker Coat, Air Pack (not on air), Firefighting Helmet, NFPA approved Structural Firefighting Gloves, and Ankle Weights (5 lbs per ankle). The time allotted to complete the obstacle course will be eight minutes, time starts on event 2 (equipment carry) and ends after completion of event eight (dummy drag).

Event 2 – Equipment Carry

Event 3 – Extend a Charged Hose Line

Event 4 – Ladder Extension

Event 5 – Uncharged Hose Drag/Pull

Station #2 – Primary Search of the Burn Building

Station #3 – Mega Code
The candidate will perform as the lead paramedic in a simulated medical emergency. Wylie Fire Rescue will provide assisting personnel; these assistants will perform any activities directed by the candidate. The Candidate may use whichever protocols he/she is most comfortable with. This exercise is used to evaluate train-of-thought, organizational skills, utilization of resources and basic paramedic skills. Not specific protocols.
