The Friends of the Library meet on the third Monday every month at 6:00 pm to discuss various issues related to supporting the library.

Meetings are currently on hold due to the pandemic.

Volunteer for the Friends of the Library!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Friends of the Smith Public Library. Currently, we are seeking volunteers to help us with our lobby book sale. Volunteers are vital to our book sales' success — collecting, moving, and sorting donated materials is the work behind the scenes.The Friends of the Library Book Sale provides funds to support programming and purchases not covered in the library's regular budget.  Book sales are the main funding source for the Friends of the Library. Let us know what skills or talents you would like to offer!

In order to volunteer, you must have a current Smith Public Library Card. 
An application and background authorization must be submitted.

Organizing Donations for the Friends of the Library
Responsibilities for this position:

  • Unpack boxes of book donations
  • Sort donations to determine what goes in the sale and what needs to be recycled

  • Replenish the Friends of the Library shelves

  • Box up overflow books for the yearly book sale

Requirements for this position:

  • Have a current Smith Public Library card

  • Able to read and alphabetize

  • Able to crouch down and reach high to access high and low shelves

  • Able to volunteer for a 2 hour time frame on the same day and time every week

  • Able to work independently


What do I do next?
To apply you need to print and fill out this application OR apply online here. Paper applications may be submitted at the Service Desk anytime the library is open. We receive a large volume of applications, so please fill out your application thoughtfully. Positions are limited and not guaranteed. Phone or Zoom interviews are part of the selection process. All training will be provided on site. 

COVID-19 and Volunteers
The Smith Public Library will make every attempt to provide a safe working environment. Donations will be subject to the same quarantine procedures as items in the collection. Volunteers will have access to hand sanitizer, gloves and general cleaning products. Volunteers are expected to follow all COVID related safety protocols including wearing a mask at all times, washing hands frequently and social distancing. Volunteers are expected to stay home if experiencing any COVID symptoms.

They support children’s programs, computer classes, and other library programs.

The Friends of the Smith Public Library is composed of people who believe in the importance of books, reading, learning, and libraries for people of all ages. They share a common interest in libraries in general and specifically the Smith Public Library. Members agree that the community is a better place to live if it supports the library.
