Wylie Fire Rescue strives to be creative and fiscally responsible in every area of operation. This is undoubtedly true concerning how Wylie provides emergency medical services to the community. The City of Wylie is a member of the Southeast Collin County EMS Coalition. This coalition contracts ambulance service from Paramedics Plus Texas.
As part of this longstanding agreement, Paramedics Plus provides two staffed advanced life saving (ALS) ambulances that are housed at fire stations 2 and 3. These ambulances respond to any 911 emergency in the coalition. In addition Paramedics Plus also provides supplies, medications, training and medical direction for Wylie Fire Rescue.
Wylie Fire Rescue personnel are certified as paramedics as well as firefighters. WFR's system is designed to rapidly get fire apparatus staffed with paramedics to the scene in order to initiate care and stabilize the patient. An ambulance arrives to assist with care and transport the patient to the hospital if necessary. When the Paramedics Plus units are already out on calls, WFR responds to medical emergencies in 1 of 2 Wylie owned ALS ambulances. We do this by utilizing two firefighter/paramedics who come off of the assigned fire apparatus and respond on one of the Wylie owned ALS ambulances’. The fire truck is then backfilled with off-duty firefighters.
This hybrid system has proven to be innovative, dependable and fiscally responsible. Medical emergencies make up roughly 65% of Wylie’s annual calls for service. It is a top priority to provide the community with reliable and professional medical services.
