The Wylie Junior Police Academy Cadets are Wylie ISD students who are entering eighth or ninth grade (just completed seventh or eighth grade). The program is geared toward students who are interested in law enforcement or just have a general curiosity about the profession.
The academy is one week long and held over the Wylie ISD summer break. The class is organized, taught and run by the Wylie Police Department's School Resource Officers. Other Wylie PD officers who specialize in certain areas are brought in to teach their expertise. All one-week sessions are held during the WISD summer break.
Cadets participate in team-building exercises and are taught to work as a team. They are expected to participate in physical training every morning; this includes boot camp-style training as well as an obstacle course. The obstacle course is a fun and exciting way to test the cadets' skills and push the limits of their endurance. The course includes:
- Hurdle Jumps
- Rope Climb
- Sandbag Carry
- Tire Flip
- Log Carry
- Wall Climb
Cadets get to see what officers learn and are expected to achieve while in a real police academy. Cadets learn about and participate in the following:
- Police K9 demonstration
- Mock crime scene investigation
- Processing evidence for fingerprints
- Physical training
- CPR certification
- SWAT demonstration
- Driving a golf cart wearing Fatal Vision Goggles
- Team building
- SRO demonstration
- Traffic stop scenarios
- Active shooter scenarios
- Patrol tactics
- Juvenile law
- Police incident scenarios
- Present a law enforcement topic to the class
Cadets are expected to be on time every day and participate in all events. They are also expected to show respect to others at all times.
The Junior Police Academy builds confidence in participants and gives them a small peek into what a law enforcement career is all about.
The Wylie Junior Police Academy is organized by SRO M. Stewart. Email SRO Michael Stewart for an application.
The golf cart used during the fatal vision demonstration was provided through a grant that was generously donated by State Farm.
