Infant Storytime Resources

Infant Literacy

Baby Sign Language (website) is an online resource for parents that allows them to assist their infants with everyday communication using modified American Sign Language. Their website contains baby sign language resources designed around the pedagogical needs of infants and toddlers. They attempt to take into account the daily challenges confronted by new parents as they equip their babies with the tools to thrive

DFW Child (website, magazine)
DFWCHILD, a print magazine and online resource, is a premier authority for women with children in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. They educate, inform, and advocate for healthy living, social responsibility, education, the arts and the wellbeing of families in local communities.

Reading Rockets
Reading Rockets is a national public media literacy initiative offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help. They bring research-based strategies to teachers, parents, administrators, librarians, childcare providers, and anyone else involved in helping a young child become a strong, confident reader. They also have great early literacy tips and tricks!

The Wonder Weeks (website, book, app)
Based on the bestselling parenting book, The Wonder Weeks website and app gives parents the tools to track their baby’s developmental stages. It provides answers as to why your child may be acting certain ways, and what they are going through, both mentally and physically. It also gives parents tips on how to help their infants through these phases!

Babytalk (podcast)
Presented by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and hosted by radio presenter Penny Johnston, Babytalk is a podcast that understands that babies don't come with instruction manuals. Each episode is about 25 minutes long, and topics covered include everything from breastfeeding to sleeping well to parenting in the middle of a pandemic.

Overdrive/Libby (app)
Overdrive is the Smith Public Library’s digital ebook and downloadable audio platform, which you can access using it’s app called Libby! And if you think ebooks and downloadable audio are only for teens, and adults, you might be surprised. We carry a large amount of picture books for children and parents that you can share together with your little one. Additionally, you can use it to download all those parenting books that are constantly being recommended!

First 3 Years (website)
A Texas organization founded in 1980 by volunteers in the infant mental health field, First 3 Years believes that supporting the social emotional development of infants and toddlers is critical for helping the next generation be healthy, productive members of society. They educate, advocate, and collaborate to advance the healthy development of infants, toddlers, and their families.

Zero to Three (website)
Zero to Three works to ensure that babies and toddlers benefit from the early connections that are critical to their well-being and development. They offer assistance and resources to parents and caregivers on a plethora of topics that focus on children ages 3 and under. They also list options for children’s advocacy and health screenings on their website.

CDC Milestone Tracker (app, website)
Skills such as taking a first step, smiling for the first time, and waving goodbye are called developmental milestones. Children reach milestones in how they play, learn, speak, act, and move. The CDC provides a milestone tracker to ensure your baby is staying on track, and offers assistance when parents need to reassess their child’s progress.
