In 2002, eight local fire departments were in need of a fire training facility to provide basic training and educational programs to local firefighters. Additionally, the City of Wylie, pursuing the Insurance Service Office #1 rating, was eager to have a training facility, one of the ISO requirements. Hosting the facility would enable WFR to consolidate training budget needs and share training costs, while providing additional health and safety training for area firefighters.
Wylie's training facility was designed to meet the ISO requirements by being capable of holding training exercises in these disciplines: live fire training, high angle rescue, trench and technical rescue, confined space, driver training, hazardous materials, ventilation, incident management, and performance standards testing. Many companies and local fire departments donated materials and time to the construction of this facility.
Today, the training facility is used by many local area fire departments and is a source of major pride for our department. The training facility holds a burn building, training tower, trench simulator, and roof simulator.
